A few months ago, when watching the Justin Bieber documentary “Our World” and diligently fast-forwarding to the parts that included his wife, Hailey Bieber, I noticed something interesting about the couple’s nighttime routine. Apparently, to prep before a big concert, the couple sleep with four humidifiers in their room. Yes, oven. Immediately I was intrigued. Could the model’s use of humidifiers at night have anything to do with the “glazed donut skin” she’s known for? Curious to see what sleeping with a humidifier at night could do for me, I decided to try out her routine for myself.
If you’re not familiar with humidifiers, it’s a device that increases moisture in an area or room by releasing water or steam into the air. According to Healthline, humidifiers can be used to help with dry skin, sinus congestion, headache, irritated vocal cords, cracked lips, and dry cough, among other things. Since I wasn’t planning on singing my heart out to a stadium of thousands anytime soon, I was mainly interested in seeing whether or not sleeping with a humidifier could help with my dry winter skin.
The problem is that my skin is also acne-prone, which makes my beauty routine complicated. I never want to use too much of a hydrating product for fear of a breakout, but I also feel the need to layer on as much moisture as possible to alleviate the dryness. In the winter months, my parched skin is especially noticeable — I often have flakes of patches around my nose that are impossible to get rid of, no matter how many times I moisturize. I also use tretinoin for my acne, which is a retinoid and can be very drying. That plus the cold, dry air in the winter months is basically a recipe for a disaster when it comes to my skin.
I’ve owned this Honeywell 1.1 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier ($118) for years, and I typically only use it when I’m sick and congested. However, I’m pretty much down to try anything Hailey Bieber is into, so I grabbed it from the deep, dark depths of my closet and gave it a good cleaning. I wanted to see what it could do for my skin if I used it every night for a week.
First, I filled the tank up with distilled water and set it up in my bedroom next to my bed. For the seven nights that followed, I did my normal nighttime routine (which includes a heavy dose of moisturizing treatments, like skin slugging) and I slept with my humidifier as close to my bed as physically possible every night.
Although I was hoping to wake up on day seven having transformed into Hailey Bieber, sadly that was not the case. I did, however, wake up with less dry, more supple skin, starting on about day three of using my humidifier. My lips were less chapped, and my throat and nose were much less dry as well. By the end of the week, the dry flakes around my nose had completely disappeared, which means I’m already adding “sleep with a humidifier for a week” to my calendar once a month for basically the rest of my life.
The benefit surprising I noticed that I didn’t originally know was possible was that my hair seemed more moisturized as well. The ends of my hair seemed less dry, and the dry skin flakes on my scalp had almost gone away completely. I suffer from a very dry scalp, so the added benefit of moisturizing that area was another pro for me.
When it comes to humidify upkeep and things to be cautious about, there are a few things to know. The first and most important: humidifiers should always be kept clean. I clean mine after each use to avoid bacterial growth, and I never let water sit inside of it for long periods of time when it isn’t in use. Humidifiers can also cause condensation on walls if they’re used too often, which can lead to mold, so you should always be aware when using a humidifier over long periods of time.
Overall, this week-long experience has definitely convinced me that using a humidifier while sleeping has real benefits — ones that I’m excited to keep seeing with continued use. We can all thank my new best friend, Hailey Bieber, for the amazing beauty advice.
