TikTok’s latest fascination is the Yves Saint Laurent or YSL lipstick maker, officially named the Rouge Sur Mesure Custom Lip Color Creator. Beauty gurus on the social media app are showing off the new device and sharing personalized tints they were able to make with it. This process has captivated beauty enthusiasts and some videos have amassed over four million views. Teen Vogue spoke to YSL about the details of the Rouge Sur Mesure Custom Lip Color Creator and tried it out ourselves!
The handheld device that has captivated the internet has a seemingly simple appearance. It has a matte black base with a compact mirror at the top brandishing a YSL logo, but there’s more beneath the surface. The lipstick maker uses patented technology by Perso to produce customized shades. Each machine carries a set of cartridges which are currently available in four colors: pink, orange, red, and nude. For every color set, there are three different shades packed in cartridges, which dispense a certain amount of each so that they can be mixed to create the desired color.

According to YSL, each cartridge is larger than one of their typical lipsticks, making the total amount of product in the set greater than three lipsticks. The cartridges also have a built-in chip that keeps track of when they were opened and their expiration dates so they aren’t used afterward.
After a set of cartridges are entered into the YSL Rouge Sur Mesure Custom Lip Color Creator, they can be calibrated through the Rouge Sur Mesure app. This confirms where the cartridges are located so that the correct amount of each will be released when creating the shade. Users can choose from three different methods to pick a lipstick color on the app. The options include the shade palette, shade match, and shade stylist.
The shade palette setting opens the front-facing camera of the device while displaying a color wheel so users can virtually try on different shades and pick a tint. Shade match opens the device’s back camera so that users can point to a color and create an exact or similar lipstick. Alternatively, they can also upload a photo and choose a color in it. The third setting allows users to take or upload a photo of their outfit so the shade stylist can help pick a matching lip shade. All of the colors picked out by users can be saved to the Rouge Sur Mesure app as well for future use.
After selecting a shade, users click create and technology takes over. The device uses three motors to dispense a specific amount of product from each cartridge, as explained by YSL. The product falls onto the compact where they can be mixed to create the desired shade of velvet matte lipstick. The compact also has a mirror and can be detached so it can be used anywhere on the go.
