Four-star Florida quarterback Marcus Stokes commits to Penn State

Penn State took commitments from a pair of quarterbacks in the Class of 2022, but that didn’t stop the Nittany Lions from pressing hard for a signal-caller in the current class. On Friday, the Nittany Lions picked up a pledge from Ponte Vedra Beach (Fla.) Nease four-star quarterback Marcus Stokeswho has been on campus for an unofficial visit the last two days.

Stokes is the No. 10 quarterback in the country according to 247Sports and the No. 165 overall prospect in the country. He’s the ninth commitment for the Nittany Lions in the Class of 2023 and the seventh on the offensive side of the ball.

The Nittany Lions were his first Power Five offer at the end of January when he made his first trip north for a Junior Day. offensive coordinator mike yurcich watched Stokes throw in person in Florida two weeks prior to the trip.

“The minute I stepped in the building just to check in I could feel the love from everyone,” Stokes said. “Coach Franklin is a great guy. I already love him and his energy, the same with coach Yurcich. I spent a lot of time with him and we bonded well. Coach Slim (Offensive Personnel and Recruitment Coordinator Chris Mahon) is also a great guy. I bonded strongly with him as well. I spent a lot of time with [Danny] O’Brien as well. I could talk about all the coaches really, all great people.”

The 6-foot-2, 181-pound Stokes got onto the major college recruiting radar after a strong showing at the National Combine in San Antonio in January. he completed 196-of-333 passes for 2,672 yards and 22 touchdowns to nine interceptions as a junior in the fall, leading Nease to a 9-4 record in 2021.

Indiana, Pittsburgh, Utah and Virginia Tech also offered out of the Power Five ranks. Florida, Florida State, Miami, Notre Dame and Ole Miss are among the programs that plan to watch Stokes throw in the spring evaluation period.

The Nittany Lions signed one of the top quarterback classes in the prior cycle, which included five-star Ohio quarterback Drew Allar and in-state three-star Beautiful Pribula. Both enrolled at Penn State in January and are taking part in spring practice. Penn State’s quarterback outlook beyond the 2022 season also includes current redshirt freshman Christian Veilleuxwho is second on the depth chart behind expected starter Sean Clifford.
