Trinny Woodall has delighted thousands with the launch of two new ‘game-changing’ retinoids into her hugely successful Trinny London skincare line.

The UK style and beauty guru, 58, has been drip-feeding products into her line in order of application including two cleansers and three exfoliators designed to target specific concerns.

Each has flown off shelves and reviews continue to flood in raving about the high quality ingredients and ‘staggering’ results visible in as little as 24 hours.

The two overnight serum retinoids – Overnight Sensation and Overnight Clarity – use retinal, a new generation form of Vitamin A that delivers all the anti-aging, healing benefits with less irritation.

‘We’ve done one launch a month and while doing it this way sounds like a bit of a risk, it’s working because a lot of people are really confused by skincare and need the time to understand it,’ Trinny told FEMAIL.

‘We’ve been really focused on putting in balanced but very active ingredients.

‘Every single skin issue is about inflammation whether it’s ageing, acne or rosacea so it’s all about how we can reduce that which means really good ingredients that can really change our skin.’

As someone who has used retinoids for many years and suffered flakiness and redness from many, Trinny was delighted to be using retinal instead of retinol in her two new night serums.

What are Trinny’s top anti-aging secrets at 58?

* Reduce sugar as much as you can without depriving yourself of joy – switch ice cream for apple with peanut butter or a good quality stick of dark chocolate

* Have good skincare routine and stick to it every single day

* Only invest in high quality skincare gadgets like LED masks if you are going to stick to them. Buy them and see them through if you want to see results. *

Take marine collagen every day and put it on your face

* Use makeup with nourishing ingredients that heal your skin while you wear it

* Focus on lymphatic drainage methods on your face, it is excellent for reducing puffiness

* Listen to your body and your skin, it will show you physically if you have inflammation in your body

‘Because retinol converts twice in the skin, you still have downtime in some commercial products and sometimes experience that aggravation without the full benefits of the new skin pushing up,’ Trinny said.

‘Retinal is the newest, next generation form. What it does which I love is it converts once and converts inside the skin. That changes everything because it means you are maintaining strength but the downtime is less.’

As there is no one product for everyone Trinny knew she needed two different options: one for compromised skin (ideally for 25+) and for those wanting ageless skin (ideally for 35+).

‘In Overnight Clarity we put in niacinamide (a no brainer as it reduces oil levels and makes pores smaller), glycine bonded azelaic acid for red spots and scarring and chlorella vlugaris extract, a prebiotic,’ she said.

What is the difference between retinol and retinal?

Retinoids are a family of ingredients including retinal, retinol and retinyls, all of which are derived from vitamin A.

This patented form of retinal converts directly into the highest strength of vitamin A (retinoic acid), so you can reap the benefits with minimal irritation.

It helps to make skin behave more like it’s younger self, reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Unlike commonly used retinol which can cause irritation on the top of the skin, retinal doesn’t start to work its magic until it has penetrated the surface meaning there’s no flaking like a croissant to contend with.

‘It’s such a well-rounded formulation for people who have compromised skin and it still has this brilliant retinal in it. People use this and find they might be getting a pimple but it never gets as bad as it used to be.

‘For ladies later in life the Overnight Sensation is perfect. It has double the amount of retinal and has a texture that’s really creamy. You make up the next day and your skin is like “woah”.’

It also contains Granactive retinoid, Bacillus ferment to lift and firm the skin for a plumper appearance and Vitamin F – a mix of two fatty acids, omega-3 and omega-6, that protect and condition the complexion.

Trinny said she rarely will use a moisturizer over the top as she tends to avoid heavy creams at night.

‘Some think night time is about a heavy night cream which I feel it’s never been about. Our skin doesn’t need a barrier cream at night it needs to regenerate and ingredients that will go in really deeply and do their work,’ she said.

In the morning Trinny uses her Better Off cleanser and if she's not washing her hair, will use her Be Your Best cleanser. This is followed by her TipToe In exfoliant and then a Vitamin C followed by one of her BFF tinted serums

‘I might do a hyaluronic acid then a retinol but my routine usually is an exfoliant (Reveal Yourself AHA) one night and the retinal (Overnight Sensation) the next… I might put a peptide over the top.

‘In winter I might put a moisturizer when I have central heating on but in summer I want the product to go in and the toxicity in my skin to come out, If you have heavy creams on, it won’t.’

‘An SPF is so important too, you can stop a lot of damage with the correct SPF,’ she said.

In addition to her daily skincare routine, Trinny is a fan of micro-needling but admits she is ‘always scared’ to detail her in-depth routine in case fans try and mimic it without the correct products or build-up time.

‘Once a week I will microneedle my face and body. I put my PHA and AHA on my hand and then put them all over my body; that sounds really intense but people tend to ignore their body in terms of getting beautiful skin because it can be expensive to use so much,’ she said.

‘I microneedle the skin on my face once a week on a Sunday with a 0.5 needle and then I will probably put on TipToe In afterwards. I mix that and Reveal Yourself.

‘You have to be really careful where you buy them but they are an integral part of my skincare routine. When I started telling people I had to remind them to start with a 0.2 and slowly build up with soft feathering motions.’

Trinny also uses her CurrentBody LED mask on her face to assist with redness and anti-aging, has had Botox twice a year since she was 35 and enjoys the odd deep peel.

‘I do really look after my skin and I think that a daily routine is key,’ she said.

‘I’ve seen so many women who have done extreme things to their skin and have never had a daily skincare routine so up close, they don’t have that vibrancy.

‘Unless you do that daily plumping and renewing and massaging, your skin won’t have that beautiful life and energy we all desire.’
