NASCAR starting positions for Martinsville Speedway; Practice times included

Tomorrow, the NASCAR Cup Series takes the green flag in Martinsville, Virginia. Today, drivers took to the Martinsville Speedway for a round of practice and qualifying to set the starting grid.

Practice Report

In the opening seconds of practice, many drivers were shifting. This is the first time drivers have 5 gears at Martinsville Speedway. However, seeing so many teams shifting is a bit of a surprise.

Practice took place just moments ahead of qualifying. Chase Elliott
was fastest overall with a 19.995. He’s the only car in the 19 second bracket.

Qualifying Report

The field was split into two groups for qualifying. The top 5 from each group advanced into round two.

Kevin Harvick was fastest in group A. However, Kyle Larson was the only car to shut it down after one lap. He rolls into round two with 1 less lap on his tires than everyone else in group A.

Cole Custer was fastest in group B. Yet, every driver in group B used both lapse of qualifying. Larson is the only driver heading into round 2 with just 1 lap on his tires.

Larson was trending toward the pole in round 2. However, he washed up off the bottom in turn four and lost it all on his second lap.

Chase Elliott will start from the pole position on Saturday night. Aric Almirola completes the front row.
