At 73, Judith Light’s career is driving. From starring in the recently Oscar-nominated film Tick, Tick…BOOM! to balance her two latest projects—Starz’s horror-drama ShiningVale and HBO Max’s Juliaan ode to the making of Julia Child—Light has to keep her mind and body performance-ready, and that includes taking care of her skin.
Thankfully, after decades of exposure to cleansers, potions, and treatments, the Transparent star has learned that consistency—not the alluring, fancy new tincture on shelves—is what keeps her skin looking its best. That’s why she has stood by the same exfoliating routine “forever,” she recently told Byrdie.
“I use Proactiv, and I’ve used it forever. It has been remarkable for my skin because it creates a consistency of exfoliation,” she explained. “Which is probably one of the most important beauty tips that you can give anybody. Just keep exfoliating and find a moisturizer that is noncomedogenic.”
The actress particularly loves the tried-and-true Proactiv Renewing Cleanser, also known as the first step in the brand’s classic three-step system. The wash contains exfoliating micro-beads along with benzoyl peroxide, a topical antiseptic that clears bacteria and keeps dead skin from clogging the pores.

“I need things that are noncomedogenic, which means that they don’t clog the pores, which create the acne,” she recently told Glamour. She added that she also loves Proactiv’s Deep Cleansing Wash, which is for face and body, as well as steps two and three in the original system: the Revitalizing Toner and Repairing Treatment.
“Proactiv really saved my skin,” she raved. “I don’t believe in selling anything to anybody unless you’ve tried it and unless it really works … this exfoliation aspect to it is really what has changed my pores, the look of my skin, and that’s what I think is really most important.”
Thanks to her religious use of her staple faves, Light rarely breaks out anymore. But she told Glamour that when she does, once again, it’s Proactiv to the rescue—this time in the form of the Skin Purifying Mask. “I’ll put it on that and I’ll leave it on overnight. Or I just throw it on for 10 minutes,” she explained.
To protect her skin from the sun after all of that exfoliation, she uses the brand’s Daily Oil Control SPF 30, which she called a “must.”
