Michael Keaton’s DCEU Batman costume that will feature in the upcoming Batgirl and The Flash films has been revealed in detail in a new image. The actor first gave the cape and cowl in Tim Burton’s Batman in 1989. Originally, Keaton’s casting caused controversy among fans since the actor was primarily known for his comedic roles in films such as Mr Mom, Johnny Dangerouslyand Gun Ho. Fortunately for the actor, the film was a massive hit and audiences praised Keaton for his serious turn as Bruce Wayne. The actor returned to the role in the sequel Batman Returns in 1992, where he faced off against Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer) and the Penguin (Danny DeVito). The film ended up being another major success and Keaton was set to return for a third film. However, series director Burton left the project and Keaton soon followed due to creative differences with the new director, Joel Schumacher.
Keaton is slated to return as the wealthy Gotham City socialite in the upcoming DCEU films Batgirl for HBO Max, and The Flash, starring Ezra Miller in the titular role, a movie that will play an important role in bringing back Keaton to the DC universe. Influenced by the Flashpoint comic series, the upcoming film will see Barry Allen travel back in time in an attempt to prevent the murder of his mother, as well as save his father from being wrongly accused for the crime. In doing so, Allen fractures his timeline forcing the hero to face different versions of himself, as well as multiple versions of various DC heroes, in an attempt to fix his reality. Keaton is joined by Kiersey Clemons, Michael Shannon, and Ben Affleck, each reprising their original DCEU roles as Iris West, General Zod, and Bruce Wayne/Batman respectively.
Epic Movie Guys shared the first detailed image of Keaton’s new Batman costume in the DCEU. Keaton’s new outfit was previously revealed in set photos from the upcoming HBO Max film Batgirl starring Leslie Grace as the titular hero. This new image gives fans their first good look at Keaton’s return in one of his most iconic roles. Check out the picture below.
Although there are subtle design differences, Keaton’s suit hearkens back to his original Batman outfit from 1989. The iconic oval bat emblem on the hero’s chest still has a yellow background as it did in Keaton’s films. Also, the cape and cowl are firmly attached at the neck, which would still not allow Wayne to turn his head during a fight. This was a criticism of the original suit as it forced the hero to swivel every time he wanted to turn. Gone is Keaton’s yellow utility belt, replaced with a sleek black one to match his costume.
Fans should be pleased with the updated design of the Burton Batman suit. It maintains the classic aesthetic that audiences have associated with Keaton since his two appearances as the hero, while having small stylistic changes that allow the suit to match modern tastes. When Keaton returns to the screen in one of his biggest roles in Batgirl and The Flashit might feel as if the hero never left.
