Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sets up multiple movies, TV shows, and spinoffs for Paramount’s Sonic Cinematic Universe, from Sonic 3 to a Shadow spinoff.
Paramount is making a Sonic Cinematic Universe, and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sets up five movies and shows based on Sega’s beloved characters. Video game movies don’t have a great track record in Hollywood, but Paramount played a big part in bucking that trend in 2020. The release of Sonic the Hedgehog brought the Blue Blur to the big screen, and after delivering a character design more faithful to the games, the movie was a big hit. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was announced shortly thereafter as the studio began planning to turn the long-running video game franchise into Hollywood’s latest cinematic universe.
Franchises have always been a key part of Hollywood’s success, with shared movie universes dating all the way back to Universal’s Monsters franchise that began in the 1930s. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rise during the 2000s marked a turning point, though, as Disney and Marvel Studios’ success produced many copycats. The result was the creation of the DC Extended Universe, MonsterVerse, and Dark Universe, while Star Wars, Conjuring, transformers, and other movie franchises expanded with spinoffs and TV shows. Paramount clearly positioned Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as a massive player in establishing the unofficially named SCU.
After the first Sonic the Hedgehog kept its focus on Sonic and Dr. Robotnik’s rivalry for the powerful golden rings, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduces key characters like Knuckles and Tails, and new pieces of mythology, like the Master Emerald. The sequel’s positive reviews and record-breaking box office opening for a video game movie are great signs for Paramount, as the studio already has a few projects in development. However, Sonic the Hedgehog 2 also sets up several other spinoff movies and TV shows that are not yet officially announced that could really expand the Sonic Cinematic Universe.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3
Paramount has already confirmed plans for Sonic the Hedgehog 3and the sequel is directly set up through Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s ending. The studio confirmed plans for a third film prior to the sequel’s release, leading to speculation about what it could include. Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s post-credits scene makes it quite clear that the threequel will pit Sonic up against Shadow the Hedgehog, his rival black hedgehog from the video games. Shadow is shown waking up inside a cryo-chamber from the mysterious location of Project Shadow. Since the scene also leaves Dr. Robotnik’s future up in the air, it seems as though Shadow is the villain of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Sonic won’t be alone in this fight surely, as Tails and Knuckles remain in Green Hills with their new friend and agree to protect the Master Emerald from any threat who comes after it.
Knuckles TV Show
There are also plans for a Knuckles spinoff show after Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The introduction of Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba, came as an antagonist for Sonic at first. However, he made the switch to work with Sonic at the end of the day, just like in the games. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sets up the Knuckles spinoff show for Paramount+ in several different ways potentially. He reformed the Master Emerald in the finale and can now assume his rightful place as the protector of the powerful gem. Since this was his mission all along, it makes sense that Knuckles’ show will include a connection to the Master Emerald in some way. There is also the chance for the series to explore Knuckles’ origin, which is hinted at repeatedly in sonic the hedgehog 2, while also focusing on the newcomer figuring out his life on Earth. Paramount+’s Knuckles spinoff show is still in early development, though, so official story details and release date are unknown.
Sonic’s Avengers Movie: Team Heroes
one future sonic movie that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 helps set up is Paramount and Sega’s equivalent of The Avengers for the Sonic Cinematic Universe. The end of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sees Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles make their temporary partnership a bit more permanent, as they agree to continue fighting bad guys together. Although they don’t name themselves at this moment, the trio is better known as Team Heroes (or Team Sonic) in the video game franchise. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will likely be another opportunity for them to fight alongside each other, but that movie will also still likely focus primarily on the Blue Blur. Paramount could go for a true team-up movie in the future with a Team Heroes gold Team Sonic film that units Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles again, but also brings other heroes to the franchise, such as Amy Rose. Meanwhile, this could be the place for someone like Black Doom to become the universe’s overall antagonist.
Shadow the Hedgehog Prequel
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 could also be viewed as set up for a spinoff following Shadow the Hedgehog. His appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2‘s post-credits scene is likely meant to set up his role in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which will surely explore plenty of his story. While audiences might have to wait until then to properly meet the black hedgehog, it wouldn’t be surprising if Paramount is also contemplating his spinoff potential. Knuckles is a popular character in the video game franchise and is getting a spinoff following his debut. Shadow the Hedgehog is arguably the second biggest character only behind Sonic, though, and he’s got an even bigger built-in fanbase. Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 established the origin of Project Shadow started 50 years ago, there’s a chance for a Shadow prequel set before the events of the first film. Of course, a spinoff following Sonic’s rival after they clash in the threequel could also work.
Rogue the Bat & GUN Spinoff
Paramount could also take the Sonic Cinematic Universe in a different direction after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 introduced Guardian Units of Nations (GUN). The organization started to come around to viewing Sonic as a partner in protecting Earth by the end of the sequel. It could now begin listing its own powerful creatures to aid its military units, such as Rogue the Bat. She is commonly associated with GUN, as the master jewel thief is also an expert-level spy. This could be another place for Shadow the Hedgehog to appear as well. Meanwhile, it would also give the Sonic Cinematic Universe its first prominent female character. A Rogue/GUN spinoff movie or show is instantly different from the rest of the ideas presented from Sonic the Hedgehog 2 as well, so it could be smart on Paramount’s part to give each of these projects a unique tone.
