David Arquette Shares His Thoughts on Most Shocking ‘Scream’ Scene

There’s a pretty good chance that everyone reading this has seen the new Scream movie by now, as the movie has been available at home for over a month now. Even still we don’t want to outright spoil the film’s most shocking moment, so let this be your warning…

This article contains Scream (2022) spoilers.

Directed by the filmmaking team known as Radio Silencethe fifth installment in the franchise made the bold decision to kill off one of the main three legacy characters, with Dewey Riley (David Arquette) brutally slain by the latest Ghostface killer(s). It was a devastating moment for fans of the franchise, to say the least, breaking hearts across the world.

How did Arquette feel about the decision? Well, he was pretty broken up about it too. Arquette tells Empire Magazine this month, “I haven’t talked about it much. It’s a very fresh wound.”

Arquette reflects on the moment while reading the script that he found out Dewey was going to be killed off, “I had to put it down, I had to walk around and kind of process it. I understood where they were coming from, as far as gutting their audience. It was hard. It’s been such an ongoing film series throughout my life, 25 years of my life, so it definitely cut deep.”

“That morning, I got up, cooked myself some breakfast, and then I went to work and did the scene,” he continues. “I didn’t know exactly what was going to happen. We amped up the fight scene a little because I’m a professional wrestler. We made it a little more intense. If you have a lot of action, you’re going to get banged up a little, and if you have blood on you, the longer it goes it’s just kind of sticky and uncomfortable. So you’ve got to get into a Zen place, so you’re not angry. And I was angry anyway. So I just had to get into a real Zen place, just breathe through and know that this will be over soon. But it was emotional. I did it, and I hopped in my car, drove home, washed all the blood off, and that was it. I packed up a few things and then hit the road.”

Ghostface will return to the big screen on March 31, 2023 for Scream 6, but this time around Sidney and Gale will have to carry on without the help of Dewey. Then again, we haven’t yet confirmed that neve campbell will be back, goal Courtney Cox is expected to take over the role of Gale Weathers. How will she handle the loss of Dewey? We’ll find out in one year.
